HCM’s Partnership with TPC Saves More than $550K in the First Year

In December of 2019, TPC welcomed our newest Member, Hill Country Memorial (HCM). A year into their membership, we’re happy to share the story their successful onboarding and the significant savings they’ve realized since joining the TPC Member family.

Within the first year, HCM has leveraged their relationship with TPC to reduce costs in the supply chain and achieve savings of over $550K – with even more opportunities and greater savings projected for the future. While the initial results have been impressive, HCM’s decision to partner with TPC is a strategic one that they expect to deliver long-term benefits.

About HCM

HCM is a community-based health system in Fredericksburg, TX, that services a 13-county region and includes a hospital, wellness center, medical offices, immediate care clinics and a host of specialties. As a winner of the prestigious Malcolm Baldridge award, the system’s dedication to excellence is proven.

Why TPC?

HCM evaluated a partnership with TPC as an alternative to their previous consulting partner and GPO. In their assessment, they determined that partnering with TPC would yield greater hard and soft value for the organization. HCM’s culture of embracing change to benefit patients and the community made the decision to become a TPC Member an easy one.

HCM’s Onboarding Process Builds a Foundation for Success

As is the case with all new TPC Members, onboarding provided an opportunity to build foundational relationships with key stakeholders at HCM and set the system up for success. It began with executive connections and permeated all levels of the organization. As TPC engaged stakeholders and HCM began to transition, they very quickly realized the positive results. In addition, their willingness to convert processes, products and suppliers increased their attainable value.

By working together through a methodical process, TPC and HCM, along with Vizient, worked to:

  • Transition all like-to-like products to the new portfolio.

  • Evaluate and implement conversion opportunities.

  • Onboard HCM representatives to various TPC councils and committees.

  • Develop a mitigation plan for identified areas of cost increase.

After these initial milestones, the team collaborated to transition HCM to TPC’s current work plan process to ensure ongoing value creation.

One Year Later: The Results

At TPC, we work with all our Members to drive cost savings. In the first 12 months, we projected a savings of $205K for HCM.  And, at the close of year one, we have well exceeded all expectations, more than doubled the projection and produced savings of over $550K.

Additionally, the HCM team has acknowledged the value of direct support and documented, proven results.

“Our decision to join TPC was a very good one. There is not a day that goes by that one of my clinical, financial or supply chain executives does not reference TPC. Interaction with TPC and TPC Members has become part of our day-to-day routine,” said Jayne Pope, chief executive officer at Hill Country Memorial.

As a fully engaged Member, HCM anticipates that, similar to other TPC Members, its savings will continue to grow year-over-year.
